CARMINUCCI
Grottamare, Italy
Carminucci is a near century-old, family run winery in the south of Italy's Marche region, just on the border of Abruzzo. Founded by Giovanni Carminucci in 1928, they have long produced wines of purity and terroir using grape varieties and winemaking techniques native to this little corner of Italy's Adriatic seaboard. Today, Piero Carminucci oversees the operation with his son, Giovanni, named for his grandfather.
For many years, the family sold off the fruit grown within their holdings. In 1999, Piero moved to change that, producing Carminucci's first vintage of estate-bottled wine. Now with 53 hectares under vine, the winery produces the entire range of southern Marche appellations and varieties with a special emphasis on the Rosso Piceno and Falerio appellations. They also have some Pecorino vines in Offida. All of their vines lie between 200 and 300 meters of elevation.
Grapes are organically farmed (though not certified) and harvested entirely by hand. Their soils are primarily clay here, sandwiched between the Apennine Mountain Range and the Adriatic Sea.
