MOROPOULOS

Mantinia, Greece

Perched on the high plateau of Mantinia in the Peloponnese, the Moropoulos Winery specializes in the local aromatic variety Moschofilero. Apoulos and Chrysoula Moropoulos planted their first vineyards back in the early 1990's and have since bestowed the operation upon their children, Georgia and Kostas. After many years of selling their grapes and orchard fruit off, the new generation decided it was time to produce their own wine, and in 2015, they made that a reality. Recognizing the magnitude of the task, they partnered with vituculturalist and winemaker Lefteris Anagnostou, who brought with him a wealth of experience from turns in Santorini, Bordeaux, and New Zealand.

For its part, Mantinia is one of the coolest regions in Greece despite being among the furthest south on the mainland. The surrounding mountains temper the climate, rendering it more continental than Mediterranean despite being a mere 20km from the Aegean. Mantinia PDO wines must be 85% Moschofilero: a florally aromatic variety, not unlike Muscat in bouquet, but with notably higher acidity. This can create wines with ample attack and sustained finish, but without much mid-palate. Georgia and Kostas meet this challenge by utilizing full bunch pressing, then 7 months of ageing on the lees with frequent stirring - striking balance is attained.
