FLORIAN LE CAPITAINE
Rochecorbon, France
A remarkable example of what can happen when a great producer is tracked for many years: Florian joined his father Alain and uncle Christophe as a child, learning the rhythms and artistry of a Vouvray vigneron firsthand. As he grew up, an interest in and passion for the principles of organic farming blossomed, and he decided to strike out on his own Vouvray venture (while always keeping an eye to his roots).
Florian now farms his own six certified organic hectares on clay-limestone (tuffe) soils in Rochecorbon, the village just west of Vouvray proper, using no herbicides or pesticides whatsoever. In winemaking he uses no sulfur during vinification, and ferments in neutral oak to impart richness of texture without wood flavors. The wines are then aged for 4-5 months on their fine lees with minimal intervention.
