PIERO MANCINI

Sardegna, Italy

www.pieromancini.it

Piero Mancini spent his childhood on the isle of Sardegna and always harbored a love for it. Originally a dentist on the mainland by trade, he answered the call of the wine bug and returned to the island in the 1960’s, where he would spend the next 20 years staging at various wineries. In 1989, Piero realized the dream of his own Cantina in Gallura, just along the Gulf of Olbia. His children have since stepped into oversight roles in the vineyard: Alessandri in the vineyard, Antionio in the winery, and Laura in marketing and coordination.

Vines cover 120 hectares over four sub-zones of Gallura: Balajana, Scolombrino, Montelitu and Ciabattu. A hot and arid climate, distinctly Mediterranean, yet unique in its confluence of Saharan Sirocco winds and French Mistral. Truly individual terroir circumstances.  Vermentino, the island's most significant variety, is at its best on these poor, sandy and granitic soils. For their part, Mancini’s soils are predominantly granite, between 100 and 500m above sea level. Vermentino is by far the focus, though the property grows Cannonau and Moscato as well as some international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot too.
