SPATER-VEIT

Mosel, Germany

www.spaeter-veit.de

Heinz and Silvia Welter’s winery sits right on the water’s edge in Piesport. From the tasting room you can stare up at the steep expanse of the famous Goldtropfchen, while tasting some of its finest wine. Heinz took over the winemaking from Silvia’s father (Herr Spater) in 1988. He makes a full range of off-dry, sweet and dry wines from the Piesport slope, which includes Domherr, Falkenberg and Grafenberg among others. Heinz is now helped regularly by his son Niklas.

After light crushing and a short period of skin contact, the wines are fermented spontaneously on native yeasts in stainless steel. They see a little time in fuder, on the lees, before bottling.

The estate remains one of the best-kept secrets on the Mosel, as Heinz doesn’t seek publicity. The sites are top class and the wine-making careful to let the terroir through.
