TERRES DE VELLE

Auxey-Duresses, France

www.terresdevelle.fr

A new domaine is a rare thing in Burgundy. With the help of some backers Sophie and Fabrice Laronze took over an existing domaine in Auxey-Duresses in 2009. They sold off some of the less interesting parcels and set about acquiring others that were more suitable. They essentially built a new winery and cellar as well, all the while renewing the vineyards, which were in need of a little more care.

The wines have always been good, but the years have brought even more purity and refinement to both colors. While Sophie takes care of the business side, she is never far from the vineyards or the chai. But it is Fabrice who wears the hats of vineyard laborer/manager and winemaker. Having graduated from Beaune and Montpellier he gained a lot of experience in France and abroad (California even). After a period in Pommard, he joined Alex Gambal in his new negociant venture, spending 10 years there in all. When the opportunity arose, he and Sophie jumped at the chance to make their own wine. We are grateful they did.
